The state of the art of liquid facelift
There are many methods of tightening skin texture and lightening skin tone without surgery. Non-surgical methods includes using cosmetic products, supplementary nutrition, laser skin tightening, thread lifting, mesotherapy , high focused ultrasound(HIFU), radio-frequency(RF) and some electromagnetic beauty appliances. But botulinum injection type A (BTA) is widely used to remove rhytids or wrinkles making the subject looks younger .
Conventiona Botox Injection
Allergan’s botulinum toxin type A received approval from the Food and Drug Administration in 1989, its indications have quickly expanded. Once a therapy limited to ocular dystonias, Botox is now used in numerous areas throughout the body, with applications ranging from medicinal to cosmetic.
Botulinum toxin, also called “miracle poison,” is one of the most poisonous biological substances known. It is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, an anaerobic, gram-positive, spore-forming rod commonly found on plants, in soil, water and the intestinal tracts of animals.
The applications for Botox seem endless, especially in facial rejuvenation. Botox with the standard dilution of 100 IU in 2.5ml of normal saline has been used to paralyze muscle , making it temporary weak and atrophic. The effect of muscle paralysis is around 3-4 months .
Surgeons first tested botulinum toxin A in humans in 1978, when Alan B. Scott, MD, received permission from the FDA to study the drug’s effect on strabismus. Ten years later, Allergan acquired the rights to distribute the drug, marketed first as Oculinum, and conducted additional trials for indications including benign essential blepharospasm and cervical dystonia.
